So, you have been reading all those articles telling you the characteristics of toxic relationships and how toxic people lie, manipulate you, sabotage your other relationships, and cause confusion, anxiety, self-doubt … And you realize you need to break free from the cycle of abuse for your own good.

Finally, you summon up your courage to make the decision to stop letting toxic relationships sabotage your life. But then, you realize you lack the energy and the clarity of mind to get your life together, and the toxic thoughts and emotions from the abuse often drag your mind to walk on a road with deserted scenery.

And the setbacks don’t end there. The long-term disturbance on your brain has resulted in decreased productivity, compromised work performance, and a lack of well-being. Chronic fatigue is also on the scene, and you find it challenging to even just go about your daily life.

It’s almost like your mind has become ruins. Nothing beautiful is coming from it.

What do you do then? How do you get your life back?

1. Awareness and the right perspective

First of all, you need to be aware of the situation you are in and realize it does not need to stay that way. You deserve a good and satisfying life.

2. Empower your brain

You need to start to instill life, vitality and hope into your mind and emotions, providing the nutrients they need to thrive again.

Construct a retreat for your brain with the things you want in life. Find things you are interested in: things radiating hope, bringing momentum, arousing your curiosity, providing comfort, and things you would like to put in efforts to produce beautiful fruits in your life going forward.

Luckily, you can now easily find resources and inspirations from YouTube videos. There are many people sharing their lives, teaching people new skills and showcasing their talents on the platform. There is an assortment of categories to choose from.

3. Defense, defense, defense

Have you ever thought about where the thoughts you were aware of came from? Did they all originate from your brain?

How many times have you found thoughts just kept on coming at you when you were brushing your teeth or doing the dishes and had no intention to use your brain? And those thoughts brought you anxiety, anger, bitterness, resentment…, depriving you of your down time and hindering you from using your brain on the things you need to work on after you were done.

NOT every thought or emotion deserves your attention

Those uninvited thoughts or emotions were just like attacks on your brain, robbing you of your time and energy with toxins. So you need to stop giving free access to those harmful thoughts and emotions.

It means that, in addition to meaningful, new constructions on the territory of your mind, you also need to guard it against thieves and intruders.

Key acknowledgment

The key to successfully managing to accomplish this after enduring toxic relationships is acknowledging the fact that the best thing you can do is sever ties with toxic people wisely and with caution, and take your attention away from them completely. Any thought about them is adding to your sunk cost.

Stay clear of the traps

So, slam the door to those thoughts compromising your well-being or demanding justice. They continue to connect you to your past, which doesn’t serve your interests. And make no mistake, those toxic people can’t repay you.

Maybe, you can look at toxic relationships this way: you get humus for better and more abundant harvests in your life going forward. I say this respectfully. Let’s face it. Toxic people don’t enjoy a good life. They are poor people.

4. Perseverance

Personally, I don’t particularly like this word, perseverance, but your road back to a life full of vitality, creativity and hope is truly constructed with it. It’s a day-to-day fight. You build up your mental muscle with continued wise choices over time.

And don’t forget to cheer yourself on along the way by celebrating little victories or small milestones.

5. Expect to live a more abundant life

What everybody wants is a smooth-sailing life; curveballs are not welcomed. But I think you will find all those setbacks you eventually get rid of are stepping stones for you to build a more abundant life. It begins with your prosperous soul, and then moves on to other areas of your life.

So, cheer up with the expectation that you will not only get your life back, but also reap a harvest of blessings that will benefit you for a lifetime!
